Lenovo company has recently released new wireless headphones to the market under the name of Lenovo GM2 Pro which is an improved version of the Lenovo GM2, specifically targeted towards the mobile gamers community, it has a cool design that resembles a UFO or a seashell, but more importantly, it is equipped with good hardware such as the latest Bluetooth 5.3 chip that delivers a stable connection and preserves the battery, huge 350mAh battery that provides up to 30 hours of usage in a single charge, and a decent microphone that allows for clear calls and improves the gaming experience, not to mention the high audio quality and low latency, in this review, I will be going over all of its features in more detail to see if it is a good choice for a headphone.

Design And Build Quality

Charging Case

The Lenovo GM2 Pro comes in a nice Seashell shaped case made of plastic with a matt finish well crafted it leaves no fingerprints behind and doesn’t get scratches so you know it will look new for a long time, it is medium size and lightweight you can easily slide it in your pocket and take it with you on the go.

from the front we can notice a big and shiny LED that covers the middle, it lights when you open the lid as well as when you plug the case to charge, the LED is very shiny and big and it makes the GM2 Pro look like a UFO which is a cool design idea.

Above the LED we don’t find a small cut but rather a wide gap where you can put your thumb to lift the lid, the lid is thin, and it opens so wide that it is easy to put the earphones in and out of the case, the lid is also held magnetically to the rest of the body and doesn’t open no matter how hard you shake it, but it can easily be opened with one hand, underneath the lid we find the inside of the case, which is made out of glossy plastic and has the compartments for the headphones and the contact pins that charge them, unfortunately, we don’t get an LED screen that indicates the battery level of the earbuds and the case.

From above we can notice a cool pattern with the thinkplus logo and from the backside, there is the USB C charging port, the bottom of the case has a pattern similar to the one above so it is effortless to confuse which one is which except that on the bottom we find the Lenovo logo. Even though this is a budget-friendly device, its build quality is still good, it doesn’t feel cheap but rather sturdy and well-built which gives me a good feeling about its durability, and the design is one of the coolest ones I have ever seen on a pair of wireless headphones.

Earbuds

The earbuds match the theme of the charging case, they are medium size and lightweight with an in-ear style, they consist mainly of ABS plastic with a matt finish on the interior and a glossy one on the exterior, and the stem is medium size with a cool pattern and a flat exterior which is a  design choice than the curvy one simply because it improves the accuracy of the touch control, the latter is located at the upper side of the stem right along the LED indicator that indicates charging and connectivity, I have always been a fan of the short stem style because the long ones looked corny to me, but each person has his own preference.

The GM2 Pro are in-ear style, this style is good for sound quality but could hurt your ear if you put on the music too loudly or use it for a long time, the replaceable silicone ear tips stick very well to the ears and don’t let the earbuds fall off no matter what, this is good news for people who like to practice sports so they can work out freely without the fear of the earbuds falling, the fit is so tight that it creates a strong passive noise canceling which could be an advantage if you are trying to focus but could also be an inconvenience if you need to communicate with people around you, in the box we find two additional ear tips of the sizes Small and Large so you can choose whichever fits your ears more comfortably.

Lenovo GM2 Pro – Touch Control Panel

The multi-function touch control of the Thinkplus GM2 Pro is located right on top of the LEDs, it is accurate and sensitive and the flat and wide exterior of the headphones improves the accuracy as it is harder to miss a touch even when you are moving, the touch control serves mainly as music playback and volume control as well as to accept/reject calls, the stem is long enough so you won’t hit the touch control when you try to adjust the earphone’s position which makes the user experience more pleasant.

The touch controls for the playback are as follows:

  • Simple touch the right earbud to increase the volume
  • Simple touch the left earbud to reduce the volume
  • Double click on any earbud to pause/resume
  • Triple touch on the right earbud to play the next track
  • Triple touch on the left earbud to play the previous track
  • activate Siri: long pressing the left earphone Button for 2 seconds.

Calls:

  • answer the call by double-clicking the left or the right earphone
  • long press the left or the right earphone for two seconds to reject the call
  • double-click the left or right earphone to hang up

Thinkplus GM2 Pro – Waterproof

The Lenovo GM2 Pro has no official waterproof rating, it can’t come in contact with water such as rain because that will damage it, however, it is sweatproof, so it is okay to do a workout session wearing them to enjoy your favorite tracks while taking care of your health to make it more enjoyable, without worrying about them getting damaged.

I feel like an IPX4 rating is the minimum protection headphones must have to provide protection against rain and water splashes and extend their longevity.

How To Pair Lenovo GM2 Pro

The Lenovo Thinkplus GM2 Pro is equipped with the improved Bluetooth 5.3 chip which is the latest Bluetooth chip available, it is capable of establishing a stable connection with most Bluetooth-enabled devices, and it is compatible with all modern platforms such as IOS, Android, and Windows and it connects automatically and almost instantly, to pair your smartphone with these headphones, you will need to follow these few simple steps:

  • Take your earbuds out of the charging case, they are now in pairing mode
  • Turn On Bluetooth on your smartphone and put it in discovery mode
  • Find Lenovo Thinkplus GM2 Pro and pair it
How To Pair Lenovo GM2 Pro

The pairing process is only needed once, next time you wanna use the earphone, you only need to take them out of the case and turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone, the two devices will connect automatically before you know it, additionally, the earbuds can be used individually in case one of them runs out of battery or any other reason, In the Bluetooth setting, you can set the decoding to AAC instead of SBC for better audio quality.

Lenovo GM2 Pro – Audio Quality

The Lenovo GM2 Pro offers a decent audio quality that ranks among the best in this price range, which is expected because of the 10mm driver and Bluetooth 5.3, the ear tips provide strong passive noise canceling, and the earbuds themselves are voluminous, this combination is helpful for focusing on the task between hand whether its study or work or something else, but extensive usage might cause hearing loss and hurt your ears so we recommend you be cautious about it.

Technically, the sound signature is warm, the earbuds produce a nice punchy bass, the mids are okay and the treble is a veil, which is the same profile on every cheap earphone, the good thing is that the sound is clear, you won’t be alarmed by any hissing or squeaking sound, and even at high volume, you won’t notice distortion, but the sound will leak and this might cause discomfort for others so we recommend you keep the volume at 70% since it is loud enough for most users, additionally, you can set the decoding to AAC instead of SBC in the Bluetooth settings to benefit from better audio knowing that it drains the battery on Android but works just fine on IOS devices.

Thinkplus GM2 Pro – Microphone Quality

The microphone quality on the Lenovo Thinkplus GM2 Pro is above average, tests have shown that the microphones work very well in quiet places, during a call, the recipient can hear you just fine, however, you might encounter some issues passing a call in crowded spaces such as a street or a train, the background noises can interfere and reduce the call quality, the fishbowl sound effect amplifies and depending on the complexity of the environment it might become very hard to hear you, luckily, since we know that the microphones are located at the very bottom of each earbud, I have found that just by placing one earbud near your mouth and listening through the other, the call quality improves.

Keep in mind that even pricy wireless earphones face the challenge of offering good enough microphone quality for calls, let alone the cheap ones, so I think that Lenovo Gm2 pro does a very good job in this department.

Lenovo GM2 Pro – Latency & Gaming

The Lenovo GM2 Pro is marketed as a gaming headphone for all gamers, we have seen so many companies use this phrase for marketing purposes but not deliver, fortunately for us the GM2 Pro is one of the few earphones that kind of deliver on this promise, thanks to the fast Bluetooth 5.3 chip, these earphones offer a good gaming experience both for mobile and PC gamers, with a low latency of under 100ms, you won’t notice any delay between the audio and the video in your games which gives you a better chance at winning, It is worth noting that wired headphones provide lower latency than wireless ones, Bluetooth headphones are usually used for casual gaming and content consumption, if you need a low latency headphone, check them out here.

As for content consumption, in addition to good sound quality, the thinkplus GM2 pro has no noticeable delay between the audio and the video, whether it is a Youtube video or a Netflix show, the lip-synching is on point and all the sound matches the video which is the best we can ask for.

Lenovo GM2 Pro – Battery & charging

The Lenovo Thinkplus GM2 Pro does not fall short on battery life, with a combination of a 350mAh battery inside the case, 40mAh battery in the earbuds, and the power-efficient Bluetooth 5.3 chip, you will be able to squeeze out 5 hours of music playback with a single charge, and a total of up to 30 hours with the charging case, this significant autonomy makes the GM2 Pro a perfect daily driver, especially that it sticks well and doesn’t fall and offers good sound and call quality.

To charge the case, you only have to connect it with the USB C cable and plug it into your computer or a charging box, the LED will light indicating that it is charging, it only takes around 1.5 hours to charge from 0, as for the earbuds fully, the charge by putting them inside the charging case through the pins and they take around 1 hour to fully charge and their LED will blink indicating charging.

Final verdict

I really like this new model of earphones, I think that the GM2 Pro offers a lot for an affordable pair of headphones, and implements those features very well, they have made a good choice to adopt the Bluetooth 5.3 chip, it is the best in the market when it comes to the latency and the stability of the connection, the touch controls are just what you need them to be and the battery life is above average, not to mention the sound and call quality, both are fantastic especially the microphone, the only major downside is the absence of waterproof protection, all in all, in my opinion, the GM2 Pro is top 3 headphones of this price range.
